THE CAMBRIDGE SCRUTONIAN SOCIETY

Prelude

The Cambridge Scrutonian Society is a discussion group of undergraduate and postgraduate students, STEM and humanities. We are named after the late English writer, Roger Scruton, who wrote over sixty books, fiction and non-fiction on topics ranging from the philosophy of wine, architecture, literary criticism, musicology, English country farming, the sense of the sacred, opera, sexual ethics, and the philosophical significance of neuroscience.

Our society is for those interested in developing such a polymath range of interests as well as broadening their perspective on their own subject. To that end, we invite a wide variety of speakers, often figures with whom Scruton in some manner worked, and host discussion groups on selections of Scruton’s writings. What We Do

Guest Speakers

We invite speakers ranging from musicians to historians and philosophers to perpetuate Scruton’s legacy of a polymath understanding of culture.

Discussion Groups

During Michaelmas 2022, we will be looking at Scruton’s Modern Culture and The Aesthetics of Music, alongside a selection of contrasting texts engaging with comparable themes.

Socials

We frequently host dinners and drinks in conjunction with our speaker events and discussion groups.
